È successo qualcosa mentre il MacBook era in stop...

Stasera, accendendo il Mac al rientro del lavoro, mi sono accorto che c'era qualcosa di strano...

La prima cosa che mi è saltata all'occhio è che lo spazio libero disponibile sul disco principale era meno di quanto sarebbe dovuto essere... è un po' una mia mania: ho poco più di 100GB liberi e cerco di tenerli quanto più possibile "stabili e sotto controllo" diciamo nella speranza (non so se vana o meno) di riuscire ad accorgermi se qualche programma benevolo o malevolo che sia cominci a "lavorare male" e succhiare spazio. A volte lo spazio disponibile diminuisce di qualche centinaia di MB anche con l'uso normale ma poi basta un riavvio e torna ad essere quello di prima (dovrebbero essere i file temporanei della memoria virtuale, praticamente gli swap files in /private/var/vm/).

Poiché ieri sera quando ho messo in stop il Mac lo spazio libero sul disco era giusto e la cosa mi ha insospettito ho aperto monitoraggio attività ed ho notato un valore abnorme in memoria/spazio di scambio utilizzato, nell'ordine di 500MB. Ho fatto uno screenshot dopo qualche minuto ed il valore era leggermente sceso ma sempre inspiegabilmente alto:

Premesso che dopo un riavvio è comunque tornato tutto nella regola, mi chiedo se dando un'occhiata ai log in console c'è modo di capire cosa sia successo. Soprattutto vorrei sapere se c'è da preoccuparsi di qualcosa. Qualcuno in grado di darmi una mano? Faxus?

Quello che posso dire per certo è che il Mac non è stato in stop tutto il tempo perché ci sono diverse attività nel periodo incriminato . Non sono sicuro dell'orario preciso ma dovrei aver messo in stop il Mac ieri sera verso le 23:45 e l'ho riattivato oggi alle 19:00 passate.

Il fatto è che quando il portatile va in stop, il sistema salva su disco quello che è presente in ram, questo per prevenire crash in caso di mancanza di corrente (si scarica o togli la batteria)... Probabilmente qualcosa è andato storto durante il risveglio e il sistema non ha cancellato l'immagine creata, ma se la cosa non si ripete non me ne preoccuperei più di tanto...

Grazie per la risposta Sergio, è proprio quello che pensavo io. Purtroppo però la cosa si è appena ripetuta.

Da solo non riesco a capire cosa generi il problema, quindi vorrei di nuovo postare immagini e log del problema, così che se qualche volenteroso abbia voglia di darci un'occhiata potrebbe darmi una mano.

Le due cose che immediatamente mi indicano che qualcosa non va sono, come ho già detto sopra:

1) Dello spazio in più occupato sul disco principale. Ho fatto una piccola ricerca con Find any File ed ho trovato anche il file relativo, che è questo evidenziato (le dimensioni sono le stesse del file Sleepimage, non so se sia correlato o meno):

2) L'atra cosa che salta subito all'occhio è il valore altissimo di spazio disco occupato in memoria/spazio di scambio utilizzato visibile sia da iStat Menus che da monitoraggio attività:

Nel prossimo messaggio posterò anche il log da Console relativo a quello accaduto tra lo spegnimento di stamattina poco dopo le 7:00 e la riaccensione nel pomeriggio, pochi minuti fa.

A me sembra banalmente un problema legato ad impostazioni relative all'alimentazione o genericamente in quel campo.

Molto probabile che una reimpostazione del SMC riporti le cose a posto.
Per sovrappiù potresti anche eseguire quella della NVRAM

Poi verifica, se non cambiasse nulla esegui

e riporta il risultato tra i tag Code, per favore.

Poi dal menù Vai del Finder apri /private/var/vm ed elenca il contenuto, con dimensioni e data di modifica.
Postalo qui, come vuoi, anche come immagine, non ha importanza.

Infine indica l'ammontare della tua ram (scusa ma non ricordo e dovrei cercare in un check...)

Ora sono al lavoro, ma appena mi sarà possibile staserà proverò a fare le reimpostazioni di SMC e NVRAM e vediamo come va.

Dunque... Allora faxus, ho fatto le reimpostazioni di SMC e NVRAM ma non sono ancora in grado di dire se sia cambiato qualcosa o meno; probabilmente potrò dirlo domani dopo aver lasciato il MacBook in stop durante la notte. Tipicamente, il problema che potrebbe presentarsi è quello dell'elevatissima dimensione del valore in memoria/spazio di scambio utilizzato come dicevo nei primi post di questo thread e, forse non l'ho detto prima, questi valori aumentano solo durante lo stop notturno, la sera quando metto in stop il MacBook il valore è 0, alla riattivazione al mattino invece ci sono come ho mostrato anche fino a 800MB.

Comunque c'è un'altra cosa che non mi quadra e sono proprio quello che chiedevi tu, ossia i file di swap ed anche quello sleepimage nella cartella vm. Appena riavvio il Mac la situazione è questa che ti mostro di seguito: Ci sono due file di swap di cui uno da 1,1GB che non credo proprio ci debba essere; non appena riavviato il Mac. Il file sleepimage, invece è forse troppo piccolo, anche lui è di 1,1GB mentre la RAM del mio MacBook è di 8GB.

A questo punto ti chiederei se c'è un modo per cancellare questi file (sia quelli di swap che lo sleepimage) e fare in modo che vengano ricreati completamente nuovi. Se non sbaglio ho letto che anche col comando da terminale in realtà i file di swap non vengono realmente cancellati perché potrebbero essere in uso dal sistema che continuerebbe a indirizzare le proprie richieste a quei contenuti anche se non più visibili da un utente.

Per lo sleepimage, anche se lo saprai già, metti questo comando nel terminale: sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage

Per i file di swap basterebbe un riavvio per essere eliminati e ricreati quando il sistema inizia a scrivere sul disco. Rimangono tali anche riavviando?

Si, grazie. Aspetto prima qualche altro intervento per cercare di capire che tipo di problema possa esserci stato e come sia meglio procedere e se non salta fuori niente procedo col comando da terminale.

Si esatto. L'ho scritto sopra, ma ora l'ho evidenziato meglio.
Lo screenshot che ho postato nel messaggio precedente alla cartella /private/var/vm è stato scattato dopo il riavvio del Macbook.

Vediamo un po' cosa dicono gli altri perchè sarei curioso anch'io di saperlo. Lo sleepimage l'ho proprio disabilitato, mentre spesso nonostante qualche gb di ram libero la memoria swappa sul disco ma non mi ha mai dato fastidio. Monitorando ad occhio pare che spesso sia firefox a far swappare e non so per quale motivo, perchè noto appunto che lo swap si crea quando c'è solo il browser aperto. Un esempio della mia situazione attuale è questa:

Ad occhio però la tua situazione mi sembra diversa... Per prima cosa nota il fatto che tu, oltre ad avere come me un grosso quantitativo si spazio di swap utilizzato, hai anche pagine sia in entrata che in uscita dalla RAM. Questo vuol dire che effettivamente la tua RAM fisica è poca (perché è realmente poca oppure perché qualche programma ne fa una richiesta fuori norma).

A me invece (riposto il mio screenshot relativo) ci sono solo pagine in entrata (dovrebbero essere quelle scritte dalla RAM al disco) ma non viceversa. Non so bene cosa significhi ma credo che sia una situazione atipica... È come se la RAM fosse comunque sufficiente (in quanto non ci sono pagine scritte sull'HD che vengono caricate in RAM)... però se così fosse, lo spazio di swap non si dovrebbe creare proprio. Inoltre, cosa a mio avviso molto strana, (e lo ripeto per chi legge solo i righi dispari) a me lo spazio di swap mentre uso il Mac è vuoto, pari a 0... viene invece creato durante la notte mentre il MacBook è in stop.

Ma lasci qualche periferica collegata mentre è in stop? Dal log che hai postato si vede chiaramente che il computer lavora durante lo sleep come tu stesso hai notato. Sbaglio o hai più dischi collegati? Controllando i miei log quando va in sleep tutto tace fino al risveglio successivo. Noto quel Chrome poi...rompe un pò troppo.

Non vorrei confondere le mie conoscenze linguistiche inglesi con il sistema informatico ma alcuni mess di Chrome fanno riferimento ad un aumento della memoria di sistema.

Google è proprio una rovina, lo so... purtroppo mi ci trovo bene ed ha un paio di feature alle quali non vorrei rinunciare; e poi sono un abitudinario.

Per i file di swap... boh... potrei anche lasciare così, ma sono anche un "precisino" e mi da fastidio che al riavvio il MacBook abbia già un file di swap da 1,1GB. A meno che qualcuno non mi dica che è così che funziona normalmente.

Sì è così.

Perché tu hai Macbook Pro Retina 13" fine 2013 dopo tre ore di stop va automaticamente in standby.
E quindi cessa l'occupazione della ram e viene utilizzata la memoria virtuale che occupa fisicamente spazio sul disco (swap).

È una caratteristica degli ultimi modelli portatili Apple, a partire da alcuni modelli dal 2012 in poi.
Ci sono arrivato in ritardo a valutarlo, per le troppe informazioni.
Alla fine mi ha insospettito il fatto della anomala (in difetto) dimensione della sleepimage.

Invece per il rumore sintomo di attività... Scollega il disco di backup di Time Machine, durante lo stop.
E non lo sentirai più.
Ovviamente disabilita i local snapshot
